Nicolas Mercier, our new General Manager

The InterContinental Lyon – Hotel Dieu is pleased to announce the arrival of Nicolas Mercier as General Manager, succeeding Madelijn Vervoord.

With a wealth of operational experience and two decades in the luxury hospitality industry, Nicolas Mercier has built a remarkable international career. A graduate of Vatel, he began his career in food and beverage at the Fairmont Singapore and the Sofitel Sydney before joining the IHG group in 2018 as Hotel Manager of the InterContinental Phu Quoc in Vietnam. He then moved into a broader role in Jakarta as Cluster Hotel Manager, overseeing several of the group’s properties.

After successfully completing the internal “Road to GM” program in 2024, which trains future IHG leaders through multidisciplinary immersions, Nicolas Mercier most recently held the position of General Manager of the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort in Thailand.

Today, Nicolas Mercier is settling in Lyon with his wife, who also comes from the hospitality sector. An epicurean, passionate about gastronomy and a wine enthusiast, he is looking forward to discovering Lyon’s culinary scene. He also enjoys team sports, especially football, and says he is already delighted with his new living environment.

“I am particularly delighted to be joining Lyon, a city whose appeal is undeniable. Its rich history, vibrant culture, and of course, its world-renowned gastronomy make it a truly unique city. It also holds sentimental value for me: as a child, I drove through it every summer on the way to our family holidays. Returning to Lyon today evokes a certain nostalgia, mixed with the excitement of settling here and starting a new chapter,” explains Nicolas Mercier.

He adds, “Joining the InterContinental Lyon – Hotel Dieu is therefore both an honor and a fantastic opportunity. This iconic hotel occupies a unique place in Lyon’s landscape and within the InterContinental collection. My vision is to continue the existing excellence, while further enhancing the warmth of the welcome, the creativity of the teams, and the local roots.” I want to support our talented staff, value their expertise, and continue to make this establishment a true benchmark in luxury hospitality, for our international guests as well as for the people of Lyon.”

Thanks to his international experience, his people-oriented leadership, and his passion for hospitality, Nicolas Mercier will be a valuable asset in further enhancing the service excellence for which the InterContinental Lyon – Hotel Dieu is renowned.

About the hotel
Opened in 2019, the InterContinental Lyon is nestled in the heart of the city’s most magnificent historical monument: the Grand Hôtel-Dieu. Its interior design is the work of Jean-Philippe Nuel, a leading international name in luxury hotel design. His decorative concept, drawing on the history of the site, is both “monastic and precious,” balancing the sobriety of this former hospital with the richness of its exterior architecture. It offers 144 rooms and suites, a restaurant with an outdoor terrace, a grand bar, and a spacious conference center.
